The National Security Minister, Honourable Albert Kan-Dapaah, has confirmed that there will be no soldiers at polling centers. Instead, the police and other security agencies will oversee security during the elections.
Following a communiqué by the Ghana Armed Forces regarding the 2024 elections, which stated that they would only intervene if issues get out of hand, the National Security Minister has affirmed this position.
In an interview with Aduanaba Abena Saah on Fish TV/Fish FM, the National Security Minister stated that ensuring peace during the elections is the responsibility of the EC Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensa, with the support of the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare.
He added that the Ghana Police Service has been collaborating with other security agencies, such as the Immigration Service, in preparation for the December 7 elections. As such, soldiers are excluded from direct involvement at polling centers since their role differs slightly.
The National Security Minister emphasized that soldiers would only be deployed to voting areas if situations become uncontrollable. However, he expressed confidence that the preparations made so far would ensure a peaceful election.
