The ongoing saga of Nico Williams’ potential move to FC Barcelona has become a focal point this summer, with former presidential candidate Víctor Font casting doubt on the likelihood of the transfer.
Despite the optimism expressed by current president Joan Laporta, signs from Athletic Bilbao suggest that a deal is not feasible, primarily due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties.
In an interview with The Athletic, Font candidly addressed the situation: “I would like to be able to sign Nico Williams because that is what we need. The president has said that it is possible, but it is not true. It cannot be done today. We hope it will be possible tomorrow or the next day.”
Font’s remarks underscore the challenges facing Barcelona in their pursuit of the Spanish-born Ghanaian winger. He also criticized Laporta and the current board for creating false hopes among fans regarding high-profile signings like Williams. “We members want to dream and believe what they tell us. The problem is that we have been telling ourselves for three summers that everything is fine and that we will sign players and with that everything is resolved. Every year that passes, credibility is falling. This summer, if the promises are not fulfilled, credibility will fall even more.”
The economic crisis at Barça continues to be a significant hurdle, making it increasingly difficult for the club to secure top talent.
