Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has tempered expectations for the upcoming season, stating that his primary focus will be on avoiding another relegation battle rather than targeting a trophy.
Speaking at a press conference, Ouattara emphasized that, after narrowly escaping relegation last season, the team’s immediate goal is to achieve stability and gradual improvement.
“I can’t guarantee a trophy next season, but I am committed to building a team that can compete and stay clear of relegation,” he said.
The Phobians secured their top-flight status with a crucial 3-2 victory over Bechem United on the final day of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.
They had similarly fought against relegation in the previous season, needing to avoid defeat against Berekum Chelsea to ensure their survival.
Ouattara acknowledged the supporters’ desire for success, but urged patience as the club focuses on building a solid foundation.
“My target is to ensure we don’t battle relegation next season. The supporters always want us to win, and any big team is expected to compete for trophies. But for now, our main focus is to build a solid team and avoid the relegation zone,” he added.
The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season is set to kick off on September 6, with the full fixture list yet to be announced.
