Spain won a remarkable fourth European Championship title on Sunday, defeating England 2-1 in a gripping Euro 2024 final. This victory cements Spain’s status as the tournament’s all-time champions, while England’s quest for their first major prize since 1966 continues.
Spain dominated the tournament and maintained their lead against England, who were keen to end their long trophy drought.
The first half of the contest was intense, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to score.
Spain wasted little time in the second half, breaking the tie only 69 seconds after the restart. A superbly organized play including Lamine Yamal saw the ball fall to Nico Williams inside the area, where he drove it past Jordan Pickford to give Spain a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute.
England rallied back fiercely, scoring the equalizer in the 73rd minute. Substitute Cole Palmer hit a terrific shot from approximately 22 yards out, beating Unai Simon with a low and powerful finish. The goal sent England fans into ecstasy, as Gareth Southgate punched the air in delight.
As the game appeared to be heading into overtime, Spain scored again. In the 86th minute, Mikel Oyarzabal stretched to meet Marc Cucurella’s low cross into the box and directed it past Jordan Pickford. The goal was first checked for offside but was confirmed, leaving England with only four minutes and stoppage time to find another equalizer.
Despite a brave effort, the Three Lions were unable to break through Spain’s defense in the last stages of the game.
Spain’s victory is a tremendous accomplishment for the entire team, particularly teenager Lamine Yamal, who was vital in their win.
For England, it was another painful finish to a promising season, similar to their defeat to Italy in the 2020 final. As the final whistle went, the Spanish players and spectators erupted in celebration, leaving Gareth Southgate and his team to think on what could have been.
