The National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) has announced a comprehensive review of the curriculum for senior high schools, senior high technical schools, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) institutions.
This new curriculum, set to be implemented in the 2024/2025 academic year, has been developed in consultation with key stakeholders, including teachers’ unions, school heads, chiefs, parents’ associations, and tertiary institutions.
During a stakeholder engagement meeting in Sekondi, Rebecca Abu Gariba, NaCCA’s Director of Corporate Affairs, emphasized the need for restructuring the current curriculum, which she described as detrimental to modern learning approaches that emphasize critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. She outlined the new curriculum’s writing guide, which includes planning, writing, implementation, and evaluation processes, aiming to better align secondary education with contemporary educational trends and advancements.
Professor Kwame Osei Kwarteng, NaCCA Board Chairman, explained the focus of the newly improved Standards-Based Curriculum (SBC) on subject combinations at senior high schools and their potential to shape students’ futures.
He also addressed the importance of developing TVET and STEM schools for future productivity and development. Stakeholders at the meeting raised concerns about assessment rates, elective subjects like agriculture, sign language standardization, teaching materials, teacher availability, communication of new policies, and the need for more emphasis on TVET education.
