In a press statement issued on Wednesday, March 20th, the three teacher unions, comprising GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH, articulated their intent to embark on industrial action. This decision arose from the delay of the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service in addressing their conditions of service. Additionally, the unions emphasized the government and GES’s failure to complete the distribution of laptops to all teachers.
In reiteration of this stance, Mr. Williams Boadi, CEO of Educate Africa Institute and an educationist, stressed the importance of objectivity among teachers. In an exclusive interview on Fish FM’s Adekye3 Mu Nsɛm program with host Aduanaba Abena Saah, he urged teachers to ensure that the reasons behind their strike have been adequately addressed by the government.
According to Mr. Boadi, the scheme of service in Ghana’s education sector is very poor, with conditions of service, recognition, and professionalism playing pivotal roles.
He criticized the deduction made in the name of distributing laptops to teachers, emphasizing its negative impact.
Expanding on this, Mr. Williams criticized the government’s expenditure of GHC68.5 million on photocopying passco for WASSCE candidates, asserting that necessary materials should be provided to students instead.
In conclusion, he expressed dissatisfaction with the National Labour Commission, accusing them of lacking seriousness. He called for the commission to prioritize seeking proper conditions of service for its members and to adopt a proactive approach in their dealings.
