One of Ghana’s most celebrated Highlife Musicians, Kaakyire Kwame Appiah has called for a separate Ministry for the Creative Arts and Culture sector.
In an interview with AKOMA FM’s Tony Best on Entertainment 360, the musician opined that the Creative Arts and Culture sector will continue to struggle in terms of support and investments by government if the sector is not separated from the Tourism Ministry.
He explained that this is due to the fact that government will always have to share funding allocated to the sector with the Tourism sector.
He further argued that no government from the past to current has the Creative Arts and Culture sector at heart. He believes that there is not much respect for the sector despite the fact that everyone uses music in one way or the other.
“No government has their concentration on the Creative Arts industry, meanwhile for most people, music is used for everything they do. So why are creatives not respected and supported well enough?”
“The problem that we have is as a result of the fact that there’s only one ministry for both Creative Arts, Culture and Tourism. There is no need putting the two under one umbrella,” he said on March 2.
Kaakyire also believes that if indeed the welfare of Creatives is what the ministry seeks to establish, then Creative Arts and Culture should have an independent ministry so that proper attention is given to it.
