In an unexpected turn of events, Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, has experienced a resounding defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries. The confident incumbent, who anticipated re-election, lost her seat to the Chief Executive of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Michael Oquaye Jr.
The results were a staggering blow for Miss Safo, as she garnered only 326 votes, while Mr. Oquaye secured a landslide victory with an impressive 1,104 votes. Adding to the surprise, underdog Sheela Oppong Sakyi, a legal practitioner and strategist at the Office of the First Lady, managed to secure 186 votes.
Miss Safo, who narrowly survived the previous primary in 2020, has faced accusations in recent years of neglecting her parliamentary duties and hindering government business while based in the United States of America.
Many anticipated her defeat as a possible consequence of these allegations, but the margin of the loss has sent shockwaves throughout the country, raising eyebrows over the extent of dissatisfaction among the constituents.”
