In a surprising turn of events, retired Police Officer COP George Alex Mensah has suffered defeat in his first attempt to represent the Bekwai constituency in Parliament. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries saw Mensah securing 245 votes, while his contender, Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei, led convincingly with 662 votes.
The other candidates, Henry Opoku Ware and Kingsley Opoku Agyemang, polled 30 and 1 vote, respectively, out of a total of 938 votes cast.
Incumbent Member of Parliament for Bekwai and First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, who opted not to seek re-election, openly endorsed the candidature of the retired Police Officer, urging delegates to support him. However, the delegates had their own choice, resulting in a significant victory for Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei.
The outcome marks a notable shift in the political landscape of Bekwai, with COP George Alex Mensah’s bid falling short against the preferred choice of the delegates.”
