Former Minister of Defence, Mark Owen Woyongo, has passed away at the age of 74.
The Woyongo family, headed by Mr. Awini Zinge, confirmed his death in a statement on Thursday, January 18.
The former Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central died on Wednesday, January 17, at the Bank of Ghana Hospital in Accra.
Woyongo entered politics in the 2008 Ghanaian parliamentary election as a candidate of the National Democratic Congress, securing 41.7% of the votes.
Unfortunately, he lost to Joseph Kofi Adda of the New Patriotic Party by 1,130 votes (3.5%).
Despite this setback, he was appointed the Upper East Regional Minister by President Mills in 2009 and retained the position under President Mahama after the passing of Mills.
In 2013, President Mahama nominated him for the role of Minister for Defence.
