In a disappointing start to their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, Ghana’s defender, Alexander Djiku, emphasizes the need for improvement to advance to the next stage after a defeat against Cape Verde in the tournament opener.

Despite the loss, Djiku’s exceptional performance earned him the Man of the Match award.

Playing for Fenerbahce in Turkey, the former Strasbourg player showcased his defensive prowess during the Black Stars’ 2-1 defeat on Sunday night.

Cape Verde took the lead with Jamiro Monteiro’s goal in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Richard Ofori saved a long shot.

Djiku, representing Fenerbahce, played a crucial role in equalizing for Ghana. However, lapses in defense led to Cape Verde securing a late winner through Garry Rodrigues.

Expressing the team’s need for improvement, Djiku stressed the importance of increased aggression, pressing, and scoring.

Disappointed with the loss, he emphasized the urgency to win their upcoming second game.

Facing Egypt in a crucial match on Thursday, the Black Stars now risk an early exit, reminiscent of their performance in the previous edition of the tournament.
