In a recent development reported on July 31, 2023, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo took decisive action by dismissing the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Bosome Freho District Assembly in the Ashanti Region, Yaw Danso.
This decision came after an investigation into allegations of illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, against Mr. Danso. The suspension of Yaw Danso, which occurred in October 2022, followed the emergence of an incriminating audio recording implicating him in galamsey activities.
The dismissal, communicated by Minister Dan Botwe, highlights the government’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges posed by illegal mining activities.
The Galamsey Allegations:
The journey leading to the dismissal of Yaw Danso began with serious allegations of his involvement in illegal small-scale mining activities, which have long been a pressing issue in Ghana.
The Bosome Freho District Assembly suspended Mr. Danso in October 2022 pending further investigations after the emergence of an audio recording that suggested his complicity in galamsey activities. The gravity of the accusations prompted Assembly members from the district to call on the presidency to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
President Akufo-Addo showed his commitment to ensuring justice and transparency by inviting Yaw Danso to a special meeting with Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to defend himself against the allegations. This meeting allowed for a fair examination of the evidence and offered the accused an opportunity to present his case.
Based on the outcome of the investigation, the government made the tough decision to relieve Yaw Danso of his position as the District Chief Executive. The dismissal letter, issued by the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development, and Decentralisation, Dan Botwe, stated that President Akufo-Addo took this action in light of the serious allegations of illegal mining activities leveled against Mr. Danso.
To fill the vacant position of District Chief Executive in Bosome Freho, President Akufo-Addo nominated Kofi Adu Amoateng. However, in accordance with constitutional and legislative provisions, Mr. Amoateng’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the regional Electoral Commission, following the relevant procedures. The nomination demonstrates the government’s commitment to effective governance and its determination to address the challenges facing the district.
